Boston Celtics Retire Larry Bird's No. 33
A Look Back at the Legendary Forward's Career
On this day in Boston Celtics history, the franchise retired Hall of Fame forward Larry Bird's No. 33.
At the end of his legendary career with the Celtics, Bird's famous number 33 was hoisted to the rafters of the Boston Garden. On February 4, 1993, the Boston Celtics honored one of their greatest players ever by retiring his No. 33. Bird was a key member of the Celtics' 1984, 1986, and 1987 championship teams, and was named NBA MVP three times.
I was still in the womb when Larry made his Celtics debut on October 12, 1979, scoring 14 points in a home win over the Buffalo Braves. But I grew up watching Bird dominate the game, and I was lucky enough to see him play in person a few times. He was one of the most complete players I've ever seen, and he could do it all on the court. He was a great scorer, rebounder, passer, and defender. But more than anything, Bird was a winner. He led the Celtics to three NBA championships, and he was always willing to do whatever it took to win.
Bird's No. 33 is now retired by the Celtics, but his legacy will live on forever. He is one of the greatest players in NBA history, and he helped make the Boston Celtics one of the most successful teams in the league.
